Re: Everybody's Cured for the Summer

One of my great mentors did family therapy and noticed that no one could be herded into appointments in July and August. Then came September and the same old dissatisfactions were back – full force.

Why does that happen? Who cares!! It’s just a fact and we need to deal with it. The structural reasons that got you into your present dilemmas didn’t go away over the summer; they just got bleached out a bit. The reality of them and their inconsistency with where you’re going is part of the human condition.

What differentiates success stories is the willingness of the leaders to tackle those and surmount them with the hard work of confrontation and altering the status quo. It helps if you have a guide.

We get to work with a bunch of those courageous leaders – leaders like:

  • Ron N – willing to face up to a construction deadline on a mega project that was literally impossible unless there was some major attitude movement in ALL the players.
  • Len J – recognizing that, unless his team really bit the bullet and got onto a different shared leadership footing, all the rhetoric about change was just that – rhetoric
  • Jaret B – engaging in an intensive development process to up his own horsepower because his base was not equal to where his ambition was taking him

So what have you been cured of for this summer? And what will be back – just as sure as the falling leaves – to remind you of the work not yet completed that will bring you to the kind of full and complete satisfaction you would love to enjoy – having surmounted the challenge, of course…

The pulse of Calgary tracks the seasons. Summer – most pressures and commitments are muted. Labour Day signals return to action. The first two weeks are getting back into shape to run. And then, (as my friend Al C. terms them) – the 90 Days of Business start – the run to Christmas.

Your 90 Days of Business will either be a repeat of prior versions or will be met with a reboot – and fresh programs. Or, you can bring the awareness from your break as your fall agenda – you know – the big irritation that fired up as you reengaged. As one of our TEC speakers urged, “Make your backwards regret your forward plans”.

When you’re ready …
